Pattern - SUNNY RIBBED HAT

From time-to-time, I adapt patterns for my own use.   The following started life as an afghan square, but I've converted it into a hat pattern:

SUNNY RIBBED HAT

Special Abbreviations
FPdc (Front Post double crochet): Yo, insert hook from
front to back to front around post of indicated st; yo and
draw up lp, [yo and draw through 2 lps on hook] twice.

NOTES

I don’t know if I’ve ever made this hat the same way twice.
Your final size depends upon (1) weight of the yarn (2) size of your needle and (3) how many DC you start with in your Magic Circle.
I’ll give the basic pattern here.  This particular hat has approximately a 5” diameter across the top.
Regular Worsted yarn
“G” hook
When lying flat, the height is 6”
using a “G” or an “H” Hook
Ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (right side): Ch 3 (counts as first dc here and throughout), work 9 more dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 10 dc.
Round 2: Ch 3, FPdc around same dc as join (increase made), *dc in next dc, FPdc around same dc (increase made); repeat from * 9 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 20 sts.
So – in the top of each previous row DC, you make first a DC, then you do a FPDC around the same DC in the previous row.
Round 3: Ch 3, dc in next st, FPdc around same FPdc, *dc in next 2 sts, FPdc around same FPdc; repeat from * 10 more times; join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 30 sts.
If your next stitch in the previous row is a plain DC, you do a DC in this row.  If it’s a FPDC, you first to a DC in the top and THAN a FPDC around that same stitch in the previous row.
Round 4: Ch 3, If your next stitch in the previous row is a plain DC, you do a DC in this row.  If it’s a FPDC, you first to a DC in the top and THAN a FPDC around that same stitch in the previous row.
join with sl st in top of beginning ch-3 – 40 sts.
Round 5:  Ch 3 – continue the patter from above EXCEPT:
you should now have 3 regular DC in the previous row between each FPDC.  Here’s where you start doing a FPDC in the middle DC.  So your patter would be:
          - FPDC on the previous row FPDC (do NOT do a DC in the top of it first), DC, FPDC on the DC in previous row (do NOT do a DC in the top of it first), DC, FPDC on the DC in previous row (do NOT do a DC in the top of it first) All the way around.  Continue to join, sc in top of beginning ch 3.
You are not expanding the diameter of the hat at this point, but starting the sides.
Repeat until you reach the desired height
Round 7:  sc all the way around with corners of 2 sc, 2 ch, 2 sc.
Weave in ends.

To vary the size, you may start with 8, 10 or 12 DC in your magic circle.  Row 2 will then either be 16, 20, or 24 stitches; Row 3 will be 24, 30, or 48, etc.
You may also choose to do a 5th row of the top pattern before starting the sides.
It really is a pattern you can play with and modify.
